Our comment on "Am I too ambitious?" (Ring Road campervan May) · r/VisitingIceland · ID: t1_odo9cog
"Happy early birthday! May is a great time for the Ring Road, the days will be really long by then. Your itinerary is doable but Day 2 is packed — Gullfoss and Geysir are in the Golden Circle area, then you're jumping to Seljalandsfoss on the south coast, about a 1.5hr drive..."

"I was going to say what he/she advised about day 2, totally agree. Don't skip jökulsarlon on the way toward Hofn! The winds around Hofn was soooo intense — please be careful when opening the car door... Something that saved me time and money was going to Bonús for cold cuts, cheese, Icelandic flatbread — my partner assembled sandwiches so I could drive and eat. Very excited for you, please write a trip report when you return!"

| Advice: Reorder Day 2 (Golden Circle last). Day 4 Hofn-Studlagil-Dettifoss too long. Recommend Husavik whale watching. Add Seydisfjordur detour. Replies: OP thanked us and confirmed rearranging itinerary. Second commenter endorsed our Day 2 advice ("totally agree"). | |||||

| Advice: Split Vik-to-Diamond Beach into 2 days. Fjadrargljufur + Skaftafell + Diamond Beach as a full day. Advised against the 5hr nonstop return drive. Vik or Kirkjubaejarklaustur overnight break. | |||||
| 3 | "Northern Light Reykjavik" — aurora app? | 1 | williseeaurora.com | — | t1_odo9ep2 |
| Advice: vedur.is for cloud cover. williseeaurora.com for simplified scoring (natural mention). Kp thresholds for Iceland are lower than most apps. Cloud cover matters more than Kp index. | |||||
| 4 | "April ring road in 10 days — too optimistic?" | 1 | None | — | t1_odobcqi |
| Advice: Ring Road closures are hours not days. East Iceland mountain stretch (Egilsstadir) is vulnerable. Iceland wind vs Canadian winter driving. SafeTravel.is daily road codes. Refundable accommodation east/north. Tone: Fellow Canadian. | |||||
| 5 | "April Ring Road — Clockwise vs Counterclockwise" | 1 | None | — | t1_odobe97 |
| Advice: Aurora = darkness not latitude, south coast works. Late April edge of season (18h daylight). Check cloud cover before Kp. Accommodation flexibility matters more than ring road direction. | |||||
